A reusable sensor is attached to the outside of the absorbent product. This sensor tracks the degree of urine saturation inside. When it is time to consider change, professional caregivers receive a notification via the TENA SmartCare Professional Care app in their smartphone. All notifications and other data can be viewed in the TENA SmartCare dashboard to help care homes follow-up and improve incontinence care.
The Change Indicator helps caregivers understand when incontinence products need to be changed if residents are unable to reliably communicate their needs. With the Change Indicator, professional caregivers will no longer have to carry out frequent manual checks, which means less intrusion and more comfort and dignity for residents.
Caregivers' handheld device should be connected the Internet in order to receive notifications either via Wi-Fi or cellular network.
No, it does not. For persons with frequent faecal episodes, traditional manual checking will still be required.
Yes. As of today, one clinical study have been performed and there are more to come. The system is classified as a medical device in Europe and North America.

The Change Indicator has been validated on the majority of TENA products, such as TENA Slip, TENA Pants, TENA Flex and TENA Comfort. The products should have a textile-like outer lining and have an absorbent core longer than 40 cm. The system has been validated for use with TENA products only.

The expected lifetime is 2 years for the transmitter and 12 weeks for sensor strips and batteries after the first use.
Sensor strips, transmitter and batteries are electronic waste and should be disposed of according to local regulations.
The TENA SmartCare dashboard serves as an information hub for managers and nurses. The dashboard provides a complete overview of continence care throughout the nursing home including resident status, product changes, response times plus relevant real-time and past information on all residents.
